Lego has once again teamed up with McLaren to create something extraordinary—a life-size, fully drivable Lego model of the iconic McLaren P1 hypercar. This unique collaboration between the toy giant and the British automaker culminated in a thrilling moment when Formula 1 driver Lando Norris took the wheel and drove the Lego-built car around the famous Silverstone circuit.

This remarkable creation, constructed from over 342,000 Lego Technic pieces, is a one-of-a-kind replica of the McLaren P1. Unlike previous models, this 1:1 scale Lego P1 is fully functional and has been equipped with Technic batteries, motors, and an electric car battery to provide power. It boasts eight motor packs consisting of a total of 768 Lego Power function motors, capable of propelling the car to speeds of up to 40 mph.

Here is the video:

Built with precision, the project involved a team of 23 engineers from both Lego and McLaren, who spent more than 8,300 hours developing the model. The project incorporated 393 different types of Technic elements, and to make the car functional, 11 unique components had to be specially made. The structure also integrates some authentic McLaren P1 parts, including the wheels and steering wheel, while the body is constructed from flexible Lego elements mounted on a steel chassis.

"It took months of hands-on testing”, says Lubor Zelinka

One of the key challenges the design team faced was accommodating the complex steering and suspension systems within the limited space of the compact and sleek P1 design. "It took months of hands-on testing and building before we got to the final design," noted Lubor Zelinka, Lego’s design manager.

The test drive at Silverstone was a success, with Norris behind the wheel showcasing the durability and drivability of the Lego P1. "It was incredibly cool to see Lando Norris driving the car we created," commented Lukas Horak, Lego’s senior project manager. The model, designed to mirror the original P1 as closely as possible, reflects McLaren’s engineering expertise and attention to detail.

Following this milestone, the Lego P1 is set to embark on a world tour, where it will be showcased at various sporting events, bringing the incredible fusion of Lego and automotive engineering to enthusiasts worldwide.
