As Formula 1 makes its much-anticipated return to the iconic streets of Monte Carlo for the 70th edition of the Monaco Grand Prix, enthusiasts are poised with anticipation. Dubbed the "marmite circuitof F1, Monaco's narrow, winding layout divides opinions, with some drivers relishing its challenges while others find it daunting.

Despite its limited opportunities for overtaking and narrow margins for error, Monaco remains a crown jewel in the sport's calendar, steeped in history and glamour. As the racing spectacle unfolds amidst the scenic backdrop of the Mediterranean, there are several key elements to keep an eye on beyond the on-track action, offering fans a glimpse into the complexities and nuances of this prestigious event.

5. Will rain affect Monaco GP once again?

Monaco GP 23

Weather conditions are set to play a crucial role in the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. Last year's rain-induced chaos at the Monaco Circuit is a stark reminder of how unpredictable weather can impact the race. According to weather.com, this year promises mixed conditions, with temperatures not exceeding 22°C. Thunderstorms are expected on Thursday, but practice sessions no longer occur that day.

Friday should be partly cloudy with a 24% chance of rain, while Saturday poses a 40% chance of rain, particularly in the afternoon. It has the potential to complicate the qualifying session. However, Sunday, the main race day, is forecasted to be the best. With mostly sunny skies and a mere 8% chance of rain, alongside consistent south-easterly winds at 8 mph, it could offer the best of the weekend.

4. Can Charles Leclerc break the Monaco curse?

Charles Leclerc

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc’s quest for victory at his home track in Monaco has been plagued by misfortune, earning him the dubious label of a "Monaco curse.Despite his undeniable talent and determination, Leclerc has faced a string of setbacks at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Up until 2022, he had never finished within the points, and his attempts have been marred by failures to complete the race or even start, as seen in 2021. While the idea of a curse is debatable, the significance of a win in Monaco for Leclerc is unquestionable. With the skill and potentially the car to succeed, 2024 could be his year – if the luck finally turns in his favour.

3. Will McLaren and Ferrari overcome Red Bull?

Max Verstappen

After an intense finish at Imola, attention now turns to the Monaco circuit where Saturday’s qualifying session will be crucial in shaping the race's outcome. With McLaren showing remarkable progress and potentially having an edge over Red Bull, this weekend's qualifying promises to be a thrilling spectacle.

The question on everyone's mind is whether anyone can halt Max Verstappen's dominance. McLaren's improvements have been significant, cutting over four-tenths of a second off Red Bull's lead. In contrast, Ferrari has struggled in qualifying, lagging behind their previous performance, which may impact their race prospects. Expect high stakes and intense competition as drivers vie for pole position.

2. Can Mercedes improve its prospects?

Lewis Hamilton

With some upgrades in the last two rounds, Mercedes are looking a little bit improved in the ongoing season. However, they are still far away from winning positions and Saturday’s qualification will be the key for them to succeed.

The duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton will need to improve their skills at tight corners and get a good qualifying position. This might help them to make a podium finish in the ongoing season. However, predicting Mercedes’ prospects at Monaco is nearly impossible because, during the dominant era, they flattered at Monaco only.

1. Is Monaco fit for the race?

The annual arrival of the Monaco Grand Prix often sparks debate about its place in modern Formula 1. As one of the sport’s oldest and most prestigious races, Monaco holds a special allure, yet its narrow 10-meter-wide circuit poses significant challenges. Originally designed for much smaller cars, the track now struggles to accommodate the larger, modern F1 vehicles, making overtaking extremely difficult.

Despite 2023 showing promise with 22 overtakes—the most since 2011—the race is frequently decided during Saturday's qualifying sessions. However, Monaco remains a supreme test of driver skill and precision, blending glitz and glamour with the purest elements of racing, and continues to captivate both purists and fans alike.
