Max Verstappen’s success in Formula 1 is no ordinary thing. It's been 9 years since he finished outside the points in F1. But his success is credited to people like Red Bull, Helmut Marko, Christian Horner, Jos Verstappen, and Adrian Newey. One unforgotten man who played an unsung role was Sergio Perez. He turns 35 years old today.
The Mexican driver was the teammate of Max verstappen from the 2021 to 2024 season. In these four years, Red Bull went to the peak by winning back-to-back championships. The 2023 Formula 1 season was the most successful for Red Bull as they won 21 races out of 22 races.
Max won 19 races, Sergio Perez won 2 races and Sainz won the race in Singapore. At the same time, Perez finished second in the drivers championship bringing them the second constructors title. In 2024 he lost form as his car lost balance and pace and lost his place in the team. But we can't deny his contributions and achievements in Formula 1 in the last 15 years. He has always been an unsung hero who wasnt credited much for his roles.

Perez was one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1. He had 281 race starts and finished in points 186 times. He has a success of 66.2% in his races. Force India was struggling with heavy financial losses but even then Perez helped the team finish inside points contributing to their constructors rankings.

The Unsung Hero
The 2021 season was unforgettable for many as the battle between Red Bull and Mercedes was too intense. It all went to a showdown in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina circuit. Max Verstappen qualified as the fastest but lost his position at the race start.
His rival Lewis Hamilton had a better pace and was flying away. Max pitted early and Perez was made to race and hold position. The gap between Lewis and Max was more than 20+ seconds and there was no chance verstappen could become a world champion. Perez played a huge role in defending his position against Lewis Hamilton which helped Max reach the attacking distance. For more than 3 laps the Mexican defended Hamilton from overtaking and wearing out his tyres.
With his help, Max Verstappen defeated Lewis Hamilton and became the world champion. He continued his success with the team for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. But last year everything went wrong for Perez and now replaced with Liam Lawson. But Perez still didn't rule out his F1 return so we can expect the Mexican to make his return in the 2026 season. Happy birthday Checo!
