Tennis star Gael Monfils has stormed into the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters ATP 1000 tournament. The Frenchman has defeated Fabian Marozsan with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The legendary player seems to be one of the most formidable players on this ATP tour.
The 38-year-old tennis star didn't have a great start to the game after his opponent took an easy lead against him. However, the legendary player was seen executing some magnificent shots and exhausting points that have baffled his opponent to level up the game. Monfils continued his stellar form, heading to the third and deciding set, and stormed into the Round of 32 in the ATP 1000 Masters.
However, Monfils seems to have a daunting task in the next round. He will be facing legendary player Andrey Rublev as the two ATP stars will be looking to seal a pre-quarterfinal berth in this tournament. Rublev has recently won the Qatar Open 2025 and might pose a big threat to this Frenchman.

Gael Monfils credits his wife Elina Svitolina as the reason he kept playing tennis
Meanwhile, the legendary player has credited his wife, Elina Svitolina, who has pushed him not to retire from his tennis career so far. Gael Monfils has won 13 ATP singles titles to his name and has made it to at least one ATP Tour singles final every year for 19 straight years, from 2005 to 2023.
“Honestly, if I hadn’t met Elina, I would’ve retired already - no doubt about it. I think I would’ve called it quits after Covid. At that time, I was still in the top 10, but it meant nothing to me. Empty stadiums… it was a different energy, and I just felt it wasn’t for me anymore. I started telling her that maybe it was time to stop. I couldn’t get back to my previous level, and it was deeply frustrating.,” he told retired French tennis star Gilles Simon on his YouTube Talk Show.
