The Monte Carlo Masters finished on the 14th of April with Stefanos Tsitsipas winning the final after beating Casper Ruud in two straight sets. This was the end of such an iconic tournament in the clay season that gave us all the thrills and drama. We will surely remember this tournament for its brilliant matches and thrilling results. It is safe to say it was a tournament that was full of surprises already and could be one of the tournaments of the current clay season.
Speaking of surprises it is time to talk about the surprises which completely shocked us in its outcome. Nobody expected the results to be the way they did in the tournament. You might call them shockers or more likely upsets since this was one of the matches that we cannot believe ended the way it did.
So, without further ado here are the 3 Upsets of the Monte Carlo Masters 2024:
3. Andrey Rublev vs Alexei Popyrin

There was a lot expected by Andrey Rublev in the tournament which he would have gone into with immense confidence. After all, he was not only a top 10 ranked player in ATP, but was also the defending champion. Rublev was up against young and low-seeded player Alexei Popyrin who the Russian should have beaten without a breath. Unfortunately for Rublev, the fate was not on his side as he not only lost in the second round but was beaten in two straight sets. This was game which also made Popyrin's name in Monte Carlo history and was perhaps his biggest win of the season.
2. Stefanos Tstsipas vs Jannick Sinner( Semi final)

Before you go on to say that how is this an upset since Tstsipas was a two-time Monte Carlo champion and Jannick Sinner was still new on the scene? However, Sinner was in the form of his life and had just achieved a world number 2 ATP ranking and Tsitsipas's career was not really at its peak. Therefore Sinner was still a favourite in this encounter. The Greek had already surprised everyone after winning the first set against the Australian Open champion. Even though Sinner came back in the match in the second, it was Tsitsipas's game at the end who broke Sinners' service twice in the last set and qualified for the semi-finals.
1. Novak Djokovic vs Casper Ruud( Semifinal)

Just like the first semi-final this also ended in the most surprising fashion and this time it was the current Serbian leader Novak Djokovic who had to face the wrath. He was also against Casper Ruud, who had never beaten the 24-time grand slam champion in his entire career. Ruud had already given the scare in the first set by winning it 6-4 and getting the world number 1 player thinking. It looked like Djoko would comeback after thrashing Ruud 6-1 in the second set, but the third set saw Ruud keep his composure and achieve the unthinkable and not only win his first encounter against Djokovic but also make it to his first Monte Carlo final.
