Reigning Champion of the Flushing Meadows, Jannik Sinner is again facing a renewed challenge as the World Anti-Doping Agency launched an appeal against a ruling of “no fault or negligence” for two positive tests he returned in March. His old rival Nick Kyrgios has taken the opportunity to comment on this situation.

The Tale so Far

Sinner, who recently achieved victory at the US Open, had two positive tests for an anabolic steroid in March. However, on August 20, an independent tribunal concluded that he was not at fault and therefore did not impose any punishment.

The tribunal accepted Sinner’s explanation regarding the banned substance entering his body as a result of a massage from his physio, who had used a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut on their finger. WADA has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, pushing for a potential two-year ban on the 23-year-old Italian.

WADA'S New statements

WADA'S official statements include the following information. "It is WADA’s view that the finding of ‘no fault or negligence’ was not correct under the applicable rules."

“WADA is seeking a period of ineligibility of between one and two years. WADA is not seeking a disqualification of any results, save that which has already been imposed by the tribunal of first instance.”

ITIA's New Statements

ITIA released the following statements, so far:

“The ITIA acknowledges the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) decision to appeal the ruling of no fault or negligence in the case of Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, issued by an independent tribunal appointed by Sport Resolutions on 19 August 2024."

“Under the terms of the World Anti-Doping Code, WADA has the final right to appeal all such decisions. The process was run according to world anti-doping code guidelines. However, the ITIA acknowledges and respects WADA’s right to appeal the independent tribunal’s decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

Kyrgios Back at taking a dig at Sinner

Kyrgios has been the flag bearer of the people who voiced about Sinner's failed anti-doping tests, and wanted the Italian to be banned according to rules and regulations. In a recent Instagram post, Kyrgios once again directed criticism at Sinner in response to the WADA appeal.

“Hahaha maybe not so innocent after all eh?”

He added in comments: "Hahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahaha god I hope the people running this thing don’t care that he is number 1 and has money.”
