The severe abdominal injury that caused tennis star player Naomi Osaka to retire from the 2025 Auckland final showdown against Clara Tauson despite a one-set lead in New Zealand earlier this month has now forced her to cut a promising 2025 Australian Open. The Japan-born star was forced to retire from the first set of the third round of the first Grand Slam of the year taking place at the John Cain Arena on January 17.

Belinda Bencic showcased great sportsmanship in the game

After retiring, Naomi Osaka's opponent showcased great sportsmanship and shared an emotional message for her while signing the camera. Belinda Bencic later revealed that the Japanese star had been struggling with her injuries since the start of the game and accepted that it was the horrendous end of her play.

"At this moment I really feel for Naomi. I saw her struggling a bit at the end of the set. It’s not the way you’d like the match to end. It was a good match. Hopefully she’ll be fine soon and can play well for the rest of the season," Bencic said in her on-court interview.
