Dominic Thiem retired at the age of 31 after not being able to recover well from a wrist injury. As a result, a highly promising talent had to put a premature end to his career, which was a huge loss to Tennis. Thiem recently opened up on the same and revealed that the injury did not come out of nowhere to him.
The star player said that he was nearly 28 and had been constantly pressurising his wrist for about 17 years. He added that his wrist had been in pain since he was 10 to 11 years old. Hence, Thiem claimed that he was not surprised to know that his wrist injury happened, from which he was never able to recover completely.

"The injury didn’t come out of the blue. I was almost 28 years old and had been putting my wrist through a lot of strain since I was 10 or 11, so for almost 17 years. So it’s been through a lot. Therefore, it’s not such a huge surprise that the injury occurred," Thiem said on the Von Nix Kommt Nix podcast.
"It was still my first serious injury," - Dominic Thiem
He added that a wrist injury is typical for a Tennis player. "Moreover, this is an extremely typical injury for a tennis player," Thiem added. Thiem agreed that it was his first major injury and noted that the biggest before that was an ankle injury, which had ruled him out of action for a few weeks.

"I think that more people have had the injury than have never had it. But it was still my first serious injury. I think the longest I had been out was three weeks because I slightly twisted my ankle, and that was an extreme change," he said.
