Dominic Thiem recently bid farewell to his professional tennis career at the Vienna Open, where he faced Luciano Darderi in his final match. Although he retired at the age of 31 after struggling with a wrist injury and seeking to regain his top form, Thiem’s journey is far from being over. He will be a player to watch out for in the Open de Caen in December.
Thiem's sudden retirement and return
Thiem announced his decision to retire earlier this year in May, choosing the Vienna Open as a meaningful place to close the chapter of his career.
After suffering a defeat in straight sets in the first round, Thiem promptly announced his retirement in the post-match ceremony. However, this decision won't keep him from competing, as the Austrian is participating in the Open de Caen, a four-day exhibition tournament in Normandy.
He is set to face Richard Gasquet, another player nearing retirement, in the Quarter-Finals. The winner of this pivotal match will advance to face World No.14 Ugo Humbert in the semi-finals the next day, with the championship match scheduled for Wednesday.
“Hello everybody. Keep the date for my first participation, the Open de Caen, from 8th to 11th December, I’ll be there for my first match on Monday the 9th. See you there,” Thiem announced.
In case Thiem makes it to the final, he could potentially compete against Cameron Norrie, who has a bye directly into the semi-finals on the other side of the draw.
Since his retirement, Thiem has embarked on a fascinating new journey away from tennis by co-founding Ecoballers FC, a non-league club focused on sustainability alongside his brother Moritz in Austria. He even managed to score a hat trick with the team!
