Hockey India League is set to return for the first time in 7 years. After being disbanded in 2017 due to the lack of funds, there has been an attempt to revive the sport in India. A major step towards it has been taken in the form of reviving the franchise-based league. A total of 8 men's teams and 4 women's teams are likely to feature in the league.
Hockey India is set to release a total sum of INR 1120 crores for the league to sustain for the next 10 years. 10 owners are set to buy about 14 franchises which could determine the future of the sport in the country. The owners are likely to spend about INR 18 crores on each team.
About INR 252 crores are set to be spent on each franchise every year. While Hockey India will release INR 1120 crores, the franchises must spend the rest of the amount of INR 2520 crores. In total, a huge investment of INR 3640 crores is set to be made on the sport.
Base price of players and window for the Hockey India League
The Hockey India President spoke after the announcement. "The introduction of an exclusive women’s league within the HIL framework will provide a powerful platform for female athletes to demonstrate their prowess, paving the way for a more inclusive and competitive future for Indian hockey," said Dilip Tirkey.
A squad is likely to feature 24 players with 16 of them being Indians. Four of them must be junior players emphasizing on the development of talents at the grassroot level. The base price for these players is likely to be INR 2 lakhs. Likewise, the price of other players are likely to be between INR 5 and 10 lakhs.
Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian captain could be a massive attraction. There has been an emphasis on the scheduling. A window for Hockey has been provided in the December and February period. In the available window, all the Hockey players around the globe could be up for the auction.
