Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick to help Manchester City defeat newly promoted Ipswich 4-1 on Saturday after giving up an unexpected first goal. At the Etihad, Sammie Szmodics gave the visitors a commanding lead, but Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne's three goals in four minutes saw City rapidly restore order.

The Norwegian then scored his sixth Premier League hat-trick within only 68 outings with a late goal from outside the box. With a maximum of six points from their first two games during their title defence, City is now atop the table following their victory. Before the game began, there was a festive atmosphere as City celebrated winning the league for the fourth time in a row and brought home Ilkay Gundogan, who started on the bench.

Erling Haaland has scored most Premier League goals since his Manchester City debut

Erling Haaland has made 68 Premier League matches and scored 67 goals. Following his Premier League debut, no player has contributed to goals more than him. With 38 goals in 71 games, Mohamed Salah has scored the second-most goals throughout that period.

With at least 20 goals, Haaland holds the greatest minutes-per-goal proportion in Premier League history. Every eighty-five minutes, he scores a goal. The next greatest record, held by Sergio Aguero, is one goal per 108 minutes. Haaland set a record in his debut season at City by scoring 52 goals across 53 games throughout all competitions.

With 36 league goals during his debut season, Haaland broke the long-standing records held by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer, who each scored 34 goals in the first three Premier League seasons (during which teams played 42 games).

It took Haaland just 48 games—17 fewer than the previous record-holder Cole—to score 50 goals in the Premier League. Haaland in his third straight season is wying to earn the Premier League Golden Boot. The last player to win three straight back in 2004 was Thierry Henry.
