Kylian Mbappe may play his debut season at Real Madrid wearing the renowned number 9 jersey in honor of Luka Modric, who is thought to be playing his final season with Los Blancos, according to a number of sources. On June 3rd evening, Mbappe finalized his free transfer to Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old Mbappe, who left Real Madrid to play for Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, will be the first player to wear the number. After leading the team to La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumph in the same season while playing the entire season without a suitable replacement for Benzema's role in the squad, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has been handed the best players for the forthcoming campaign.

In what is probably the next phase of his already record-breaking football career, Mbappe finalized a free transfer to Real Madrid following a spectacular six-year transfer odyssey. Regarding the shirt number, one would suppose that Mbappe would preferably wear the number 10 jersey, which he wears for the France national team, or the famous number 7 jersey, which is currently worn by the in-form Vinicius Jr. and was formerly worn by the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo at the club.

Even if Vinicius is unlikely to give up his number 10 jersey for Mbappe, especially after his incredible 2023–2024 season, Luka Modric, the current wearer of the jersey, is a true club legend.

Why did Kylian Mbappe not take the number 10 jersey?

Famous Italian sportswriter Fabrizio Romano has also revealed that Mbappe hasn't even asked if the number 10 is available because he wants to pay tribute to Luka Modric's illustrious history at the team. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner's transfer odyssey to Los Blancos has seen many dramatic turns, but at last, everything appears to be going well between the two sides.

Like his midfield teammate Toni Kroos, Modric has hinted at his possible retirement with Real Madrid, even though it is rumored that he will extend his contract with the Spanish giants for a further season.
