Luka Modric misses penalty against Italy in UEFA Euro 2024 (Source- Twitter)
Croatia played out Italy in the Red Bull Arena at Leipzig, of the UEFA Euro 2024, the game was end to end with both sides having their chance. But the game was tied after the first half. Luka Sucic struck out far away from the box nearly five minutes into the match, which was punched away by captain Gianluigi Donnarumma. Near the 30-minute mark, Alessandro Bastoni had the best chance of the first half as his header from 5 yards was saved by Dominik Livakovic.
Luka Modric's side built on the pressure coming to the second half of the game. They were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute of the game, as Andrej Kramaric's shot struck Davide Frattesi's hand inside the box and Modric stepped up on the big occasion for the side but Donnarumma once again rescued as he guessed the right way denying the 38-year-old midfielder to break the deadlock of the game.

Modric gives Croatia the lead
Soon after the penalty miss the Croatian team got the lead with their captain stepping up for the side after missing from the spot the Madrid midfielder scored in the 55th minute after the Italian goalkeeper's initial save fell into the experienced footballer who smashed it inside the top of the goal. After conceding the goal Luciano Spalletti's side started off building more pressure on the Croatian side but they failed to open the scoring.
After scoring the goal he created European Championship history by becoming the oldest scorer in the tournament's history. He scored at the age of 38 years and 289 days. Though there are Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe who are older than him might surpass his record as they still have one game left in the group stage.
Alessandro Bastoni in the game had the best chance in the first half after the Inter Milan defender missed out nearly from five yards. As things stand Croatia will qualify as the second team from Group B.
