Cristiano Ronaldo was recognised as the highest-paid athlete of 2024, according to a list compiled by Sportico, with reported earnings amounting to $260 million. 

His income consisted of $215 million from salary and winnings with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and the Portugal national team, along with $45 million generated from off-the-field endorsements. At 40 years old, Ronaldo has experienced a resurgence in his career since his move to Saudi Arabia, netting 82 goals in 90 appearances for Al-Nassr and making history as the first man to achieve 900 career goals in September of last year. Ronaldo stands out as one of three footballers in the top 10 following lucrative transfers to Saudi Arabia, alongside Neymar (also on the list) and Karim Benzema.

Cristiano Ronaldo commanded a mammoth lead in overall athletes, earning over $100 million more than the second-placed Steph Curry, who raked in an estimated $153.8 million. Curry's earnings consisted of $53.8 million from salary and winnings, complemented by a staggering $100 million in endorsements.

Messi stands at fourth place 

Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi held the fourth spot in total earnings, amassing a giant $135 million. This total includes $65 million from his on-field contributions as he showcases his talent with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Additionally, he has secured $70 million through endorsements with prominent brands such as Adidas and Apple. Lionel Messi currently plays for MLS outfit Inter Miami. His contract is due to expire soon and there are rumours of him extending his contract with the team.
