In a recent press conference, the South Korean striker and skipper of Tottenham Hotspur, Son Heung Min revealed that he had not yet discussed his future contract with the club.
He emphasized that his primary focus is on helping the club secure its first trophy. Tottenham Hotspur is expected to prolong Son's contract till 2026 following its expiry in next summer's transfer window.
Son took on the captaincy under Ange Postecoglou as Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane departed from Spurs. However, the South Korea international expressed frustration at the lack of progress on a new deal during a press conference on Wednesday before Tottenham's UEFA Europa League opener against FK Qarabag.
Son wants to win a Silverware for the Spurs
Son expressed his clarity about his commitment to the club during this season. He is focused on helping the Spurs win the silverware they deserve. While he acknowledges the unpredictability of the future, he is dedicated to giving his best until the end of his contract, which marks his decade-long stay at the club.
Son Heung Min, who has not won any major trophy with the club since Spurs' last trophy in 2008, also expressed his opinion on the debate around player welfare, highlighting the increased demands on footballers due to the expanded Europa League format and other altered competitions.
"It is very clear from me. I am very focused on this season. At this age, every second is like a goal, especially this season, we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I am taking even more care about this," Son said.
"As I say, I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everybody at the club - the players, all around - deserves. That's what I'm working for. In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it's been almost 10 years and I give everything. I still have a contract with the club which is the very important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract [expires]," he added.
Son's take on the Schedule of the Leagues
Son Heung Min has raised concerns about the excessive amount of travel that players experience, which can leave them physically and mentally unprepared and increase the risk of injury. He emphasized that players are not robots and suggested that prioritizing quality over quantity when it comes to games played would be more beneficial.
