Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur faces charges of “misconduct about a media interview” by the Football Association following his comments about Spurs captain Son Heung-min this summer.

Bentancur was forced to apologize in June after he appeared to make derogatory remarks about all South Korean people “looking the same” in an interview with a Uruguayan TV station. The 27-year-old later apologized to Son on Instagram, admitting that his comments were a “very bad joke.”

The Football Association alleges that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and insulting words, and/or bringing the game into disrepute.

The Complete Story

Bentancur, who has appeared twice for Tottenham this season, has until Thursday, September 19, to respond to the charge.

During an episode of the Uruguayan TV show "Por La Camiseta," the host asked Bentancur for a Tottenham player's shirt, to which he replied, "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too. They all look the same."

Following the clip's widespread circulation on social media, Bentancur expressed regret on his Instagram story, saying, "Brother! I apologize to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke!"

Bentancur expressed his admiration for Son and described their relationship as brotherly. In response, Son acknowledged their close bond and clarified that Bentancur did not intend to cause any harm. Both players are focused on leading the club together in the Premier League and share a positive outlook.

The Club's Statement

Tottenham has stated in response to a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology. The club is taking steps to ensure a positive outcome in this matter, including providing further education for all players in line with their diversity, equality, and inclusion objectives.

“We are extremely proud of our diverse, global fanbase and playing squads. Discrimination of any kind has no place at our club, within our game or wider society.” - Tottenham.
