On July 6, 2024, a determined Turkiye team was eliminated by the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 quarterfinal. Despite Turkiye gaining the lead in the first half, the Dutch managed to hold on and go to their first Euro semi-final in twenty years at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Turkiye had an excellent game overall, but they lost two key moments. The first one came from de Vrij in the seventieth minute of play, when the Netherlands was losing interest in the match due to frustration.

Turkish supporters outnumbered their orange-clad rivals in a city with a sizable Turkish population. The majority are the descendants of Turkish "guest workers" who landed in what was then West Germany to assist rebuild the economy after the war. Germany is home to around 3 million Turks or persons with Turkish heritage, making them the country's largest ethnic minority, and the squad has received enthusiastic support for Euro 2024.

Watch here the video:

De Vrij converted Memphis Depay's cross inside the area to help the Netherlands equalize the score against their tenacious opponent. The second came only 6 minutes later when Dezel Dumfries sent in an innocuous low cross for Depay and Cody Gakpo. Turkiye defenders, who had done so well up to that point in pushing the attackers off, were caught sleeping, culminating in an own goal when Mert Mulder attempted to slide tackle Gakpo from behind at the far post.

Good campaign for Turkey comes to an end

Turkiye worked hard in the closing 10 minutes of the game to get the equalizer, but it never arrived. Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made two key stops, the first a low freekick from Arda Guler that was fingertipped into the sidebar, and the second a reflex save from close range to preserve the Oranje ahead in the game.

Finally, the tired-looking Turks, fueled by passionate support from the majority of the full audience, tried desperately to send the game into extra time but were denied by the Orange defence, and Verbruggen made another crucial save in stoppage time. After losing to Netherlands, it appeared that the players were in tears after the final whistle. Turkey had a good tournament so far and now will focus on UEFA Nations League which will start in September. While Netherlands will face England in semi-final of UEFA Euro 2024 as they beat Switzerland in quarter finals.
