England, under Gareth Southgate, is still riding high in the Euro 2024 tournament after defeating a composed Switzerland in a thrilling quarterfinal match on July 6. Switzerland's Breel Embolo started the score, putting last year's runner-up England down in their Euro 2024 quarterfinal at the Dusseldorf Arena in Germany on Saturday.

When the ball was at their feet, Murat Yakin's Switzerland played with a certain flair. The team's offensive strategy, which used players like captain Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, and the skillful Dan Ndoye to construct runs, constantly put the England defence in danger. Every European football fan was treated to a spectacle of a match between two players whose speeds clashed: Ndoye and Kyle Walker.

Ndoye repeatedly slid from the wing to the middle, making it difficult for Stones and Walker to contain Switzerland's offensive runs. One may argue that Gareth Southgate's side should have coped better with Switzerland's predictable offensive runs, but it does not detract from the type of game Yakin's team played in this encounter.

Bukayo Saka saved England's hopes by scoring a late equalizer against Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals on Saturday at the Dusseldorf Arena in Germany. After Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead, Saka leveled the game inside five minutes with a precise effort from the edge of the penalty area.

England players looked in struggled

Gareth Southgate, England's manager, seems to have learned from his team's previous dismal Euro 2024 encounters in terms of tactics, which boosted their confidence. Sticking to the fundamentals and playing players in their customary places made it easy for Southgate to unlock the full potential of this star-studded England group, at least to some extent. Bukayo Saka in the attack and Ezri Konsa in the back are clear standouts for the Three Lions in this encounter.

Saka came up in a big way as Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden struggled against Switzerland's solid backline. On the big occasion, his wonderfully placed long-range shot left Sommer with no response, pulling England back into the match.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's game-winning penalty kick put England in the final four, as England prevailed 5-3 on penalties to secure a semifinal spot. In semifinals England will face Turkey or the Netherlands on Wednesday in Dortmund.
