Chelsea entered the fixture, sitting in fourth place in the tournament standings and had shown solid performance throughout the season.

Manchester City has demonstrated a resurgence in recent weeks and needed to deliver an exceptional performance to re-enter the title race. Meanwhile, Chelsea had faltered in their recent outings and needed to rise to the occasion against the holders.

Sanchez's comical blunder sealed the fate for Chelsea

The visitors got off to a flying start, capitalizing on a horrendous error by debutant Khusanov. He completely misjudged a straightforward clearing header and then compounded his mistake by failing to send a simple header back to Ederson. Jackson swiftly intercepted the ball and set up Madueke, who finished into the open goal.

However, Manchester City drew levels in the 42nd minute with Josco Gvardiol capitalising on a rebound off a save from Sanchez.

In the 68th minute, the hosts took the lead for the first time courtesy of Sanchez's comical. Ederson launched a long pass down the right to Haaland, who easily held off Chalobah. Spinning inside, he sent Chalobah sprawling, then deftly curled a shot over Sanchez, who had foolishly ventured to the edge of his box for no apparent reason.

Manchester City hit the final nail in the coffin of Chelsea, as Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne linked up to give the hosts a 3-1 lead in the 88th minute. The attack showed a glimpse of prime City who now seemed to be back with a vengeance. Manchester City held onto their lead and won the game by a comfortable margin of 3-1.
