Celtic hosted Bayern Munich at Celtic Park on Wednesday for the first leg of their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League knockout phase playoffs. The team was eager to translate their recent domestic success into a more difficult Champion League matchup.
Celtic had been performing admirably, securing victories in five of their last six matches across all competitions, showing their impressive form and confidence heading into this important fixture.
Bayern Munich narrowly missed automatic qualification for the round of 16 by just one point after facing challenges with two defeats in their first three games. Despite this setback, the team is determined to assert their strength and make a strong impact in the upcoming match.

Michael Olise finally broke the deadlock moments before half-time
In the 45th minute, the visitors managed to take the lead with a remarkable goal from Michael Olise. Displaying exceptional ball control, Olise held the ball beautifully on the right, expertly cut into the box with a subtle shoulder drop, and delivered a powerful shot into the near top corner. This impressive strike not only displayed his talent but also gave Bayern the advantage just moments before half-time.
The visitors controlled possession during the first half, recording five shots, with two of them hitting the target. Meanwhile, Celtic faced challenges in their attacking efforts, failing to register a single shot, which meant that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a relatively quiet first-half. As the half-tine approached, the scoreline remained 1-0 in favour of Bayern Munich. A victory in the first leg, will only soldify the position of either of two teams heading into the reverse fixture.
