Vinicius Junior gave a witty response to Manchester City fans who teased him with a banner during their recent UEFA Champions League match. After being edged out by City's standout midfielder Rodri for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, Vinicius opted not to attend the awards ceremony in France. In light of this, City fans created a banner during Real Madrid's visit to the Etihad Stadium for their Champions League playoff clash on Tuesday.
Vinicius Junior mocks City fans
Following a standout performance for his club, the winger taunted the home fans by showing the right sleeve of his shirt, featuring a UEFA Champions League Trophy with the number 15 prominently displayed. This was his way of highlighting Real Madrid's unprecedented success and achievements in European football.
Earlier, Manchester City fans tried to get under the skin of the visiting team, the Galacticos, by unfurling an Oasis-inspired banner featuring Rodri clutching his Ballon d'Or award, sending a clear message to Vinicius to stop lamenting his award loss. Despite the distraction, the 24-year-old played a crucial role in Real's thrilling comeback, delivering the assist for Bellingham’s winning goal in the last minute of injury time and rightfully claiming the man of the match honour.
"I see it, but whenever the opposing fans do things, they give me more strength to play a great game and I did that here" Vinicius said.
"They know our history, everything we do in this competition. It’s the fifth time we’ve come, it’s always very cold and we have to continue along this line," Vinicius added.
Looking ahead, Carlo Ancelotti's team is set to return to action on Saturday in La Liga, where they will face Osasuna in an away match. Real Madrid will face Manchester City in the second leg of the round of 16 clash at Santiago Bernabeu on February 20th.
