Karim Benzema's stark response to Golden Boot question
Benzema's strike helped Al Ittihad narrowly defeat Al Ettifaq with a 3-2 scoreline on Sunday. With 68 points accumulated after 29 matches this season, Al Ittihad has established a decent lead over their nearest competitors, Al Hilal, who are six points behind. Al Nassr currently holds third place with 58 points.
As Al-Ittihad inched closer to winning the Saudi Pro League this season, the race for the Golden Boot has too intensified. Currently, Cristiano Ronaldo leads the Saudi Pro League goal scorers with 23 to his name. Following him are Al Ahli's Ivan Tony and Al Shabab's Hamdallah. Karim Benzema currently sits in the fourth spot with 18 goals.
After the victory over Al Ettifaq, Karim Benzema denied chasing personal glory and records and made it inadvertently clear that he is after the most prestigious title - the Saudi Pro League.
When he was asked about being behind Ronaldo for the Golden Boot, Benzema asserted his focus is the SPL trophy.
"I don’t care about this, my friend. The most important thing is the (SPL) trophy." Benzema said.
Karim Benzema's Al Ittihad will take on Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr on May 7th. This fixture is very important from the perspective of the teams who are chasing the same glory this season.
