Danny Welbeck vs Tottenham Hotspur

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion overcame a two-goal deficit at halftime to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 thanks to a spectacular comeback orchestrated by Danny Welbeck. Before the international break, Spurs appeared to be on their way to a sixth straight victory when Brennan Johnson scored in the sixth straight game and James Maddison's finish from the very edge of the box eluded Bart Verbruggen.

But the Seagulls came out of halftime with a new look, as three goals during the final eighteen minutes dramatically changed the course of the game. After Destiny Udogie struggled to clear a cross, Yankuba Minteh drew one back. Georginio Rutter then created space for the shot and fired low outside of Guglielmo Vicario.

Brighton had the better of the momentum and scored their third goal to take the lead. Rutter did a fantastic job of dodging tackles and looping the ball into the center of the field, where former Arsenal star Danny Welbeck was waiting to score his maiden goal against them. Spurs finished the match with no comeback, falling to ninth place in the standings and having time to mull over how they managed to suffer their third Premier League loss of the campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur’s poor day in front of goal

Because of the aggressive defensive strategies used by both managers, this game was nicknamed the "high-line derby." It only took Tottenham Hotspur, 20 seconds to uncover the risk factor. Timo Werner was sent off by Dominic Solanke, but Brennan Johnson, who was not marked, missed the long cross.

Lewis Dunk, who backed up, was able to keep out Dejan Kulusevski, and Maddison's shot was deflected beyond by Adam Webster, who went off soon after due to injury. When Timo Werner's header appeared to have crossed the line, according to referee David Coote's watch, Spurs believed they had scored. But because of Brighton's high line, Pedro Porro, who supplied the cross, was deemed to be offside.
