Following the controversy in the AFC Champions League quarterfinals last season, Al Nassr is playing Al Ain again. After a 4–4 aggregate score over two legs failed to produce a winner, the visitors won last time out on penalties. The Saudi Pro League reigning champions Al Hilal and the hosts drew 1-1 before this ACL Elite match. After the tie, the team captained by Cristiano Ronaldo has lost their previous three games across all competitions.

In the 31st minute, Ronaldo gave Al-Nassr a 2-0 lead when Eisa cleared Sadio Mane's long-range attempt. Only five minutes into the game, Talisca opened the score with a Mohamed Simakan assist. Al Nassr, however, did not stop there. Having just lost to Al Hilal 1-1 and been eliminated from the King Cup of Champions, they scored the third goal before the first half was over. The cause this time was Fabio Rodrigues's own goal.

After Ronaldo missed the game due to sickness, Al Nassr, now led by Stefano Pioli, drew 1-1 with Al Shorta to begin their AFC Champions League campaign. But in their second game, they bounced back immediately, defeating Al Rayyan 2-1 thanks to goals from Ronaldo and Mane. They won their third game by a slim margin, defeating Esteghlal 1-0 away from home. The game's star was Aymeric Laporte.
