Cristiano Ronaldo experienced some banter from opposing fans during Al-Nassr’s match against Al Hilal on Friday. At 39, Ronaldo has had an impressive season in the Saudi Pro League, scoring nine goals across all competitions for the Riyadh-based club.
Despite Ronaldo's success, it's been a pretty common thing for supporters to express their admiration for Lionel Messi through chants, highlighting the longstanding rivalry and affection for both players during Ronaldo's time in Saudi Arabia.
Ronaldo's reaction to 'Messi' chants
After Al-Nassr's victory over Al-Shabab in February, Cristiano Ronaldo faced some scrutiny for making an inappropriate gesture, which resulted in a one-match ban and a fine of 10,000 riyals ($2,081).
During a recent match against Al-Hilal, Ronaldo again met with 'Messi' taunts from opposing fans. However, he chose to react positively, responding with a light-hearted thumbs-up during the 1-1 draw. Despite this playful response, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the officiating of referee Felix Zwayer.
Ronaldo's advice to the referee
Despite the taunting from the crowd, Ronaldo showed remarkable composure during the match at Al-Awwal Park. However, the officiating by the referee raised some concerns among players and fans alike.
After Talisca scored to give Al-Nassr an early lead in the first minute, the match became intensely competitive. Throughout the first half, both teams engaged in hostilities, leading to bookings for Ronaldo, Marcelo Brozovic, and Sadio Mane from the home side.
As both teams made their way back to the tunnel for halftime, Ronaldo expressed his concerns to match official Felix Zwayer. "We receive three yellow cards. Al Hilal have zero, Be fair for both teams !" Ronaldo said to the referee.
Ultimately, Al-Nassr ended up securing a draw, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic finding the equalizer. While the result maintains Al-Nassr's unbeaten streak, they find themselves six points behind Al-Hilal in the standings.
