Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic personal drama and tears ended on Monday as Portugal advanced to the European Championship quarterfinals after defeating Slovenia in a penalty shootout. The last-16 game went the distance when Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak stopped Ronaldo's extra-time penalty effort in the 114th minute, leaving him in tears and consoled by his teammates before play resumed. Regulation and extra time ended 0-0.

The Portuguese striker, noted for his steadfast calm, approached the spot with steely intent but was constantly disrupted by Slovenian defenders. The ruse worked, as Cristiano Ronaldo's thunderous drive was stopped by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak, a former Atletico Madrid opponent.

Watch here the video:

Ronaldo scored the first penalty for Portugal, but Diogo Costa stopped all three Slovenian shots from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva scored for Portugal, who won the shootout 3-0 with two kicks remaining. Oblak flung himself to his left in a spectacular display of reflexes, swiping the ball away and denying Portugal the lead.

The miss sent shockwaves throughout the stadium, as Ronaldo's eyes welled up. He attempted to hold back tears, but he couldn't hide his true feelings under such strain and broke down. Teammates raced to his side, comforting him and reminding him that the struggle was not over.

The cameras focused on Ronaldo's emotional reaction; his mother, too, appeared distraught before breaking down in tears. Ronaldo apologized to the massed Portugal fans behind the goal and raised his hands as if in prayer. The crowd erupted in a loud "Siuuuu" chant, their soccer icon's hallmark scoring celebration.

Diogo Costa took Portugal in Quaterfinals

Diogo Costa answered the remainder of their requests with one of the best penalty shootout performances by any goalkeeper in history. He was also in tears. Ronaldo was unhappy and weeping halfway into extra time when Oblak saved his penalty by diving to his left and pushing the ball into a post.

The match was full with intense emotional drama for Ronaldo as Portugal overcame Slovenia in a penalty shootout on Tuesday to advance to the next round, the European Championship quarterfinals. Portugal takes on France in the quarterfinals on Friday in Hamburg; this match is a rematch of the 2016 final, which Portugal won in Paris in spite of Ronaldo's early injury.
