South American rivals Argentina and Brazil clashed in a thrilling CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier on March 26th in Buenos Aires. Before the match began, Raphinha, the captain of Brazil, made some provocative comments in an interview with former Brazilian star Romario, aiming to unsettle the reigning World Champions.
However, it turned out to be all talk for the Barcelona star, as Brazil faced a humiliating 4-1 loss against La Albiceleste at Estadio Mas Monumental. Raphinha failed to adhere to his words as he didn't find the back of the net.
Argentina fans hurled abusive chants to the Barcelona star
During the fixture, the hostile home crowd voiced abusive chants against Brazil's star winger Raphinha. They expressed their anger by chanting and asking Raphinha to be subbed off. However, the Catalan star played the entire fixture.
"Sub in Raphinha, you son of a bi**h" chanted the Argentine fans.
The hosts were off to a flying start as stand-in striker Julian Alvarez found the net in the fourth minute from close range. Enzo Fernandez doubled the lead from inside the box in the 12th minute. Brazil kept the game alive as Matheus Cunha scored in the 26th minute. However, goals from Alexis Mac Alister and Giuliano Simeone in the 37th and 71st minutes sealed the victory for Argentina.
Leandro Paredes joined in the chime after the match. He revealed that Raphina's statement was circulated in the WhatsApp group of Argentina's national squad.
"You shouldn’t talk beforehand, especially when you can’t back it up on the field afterward. As soon as he [Raphinha] said that, we sent it to the WhatsApp group." "We always do our talking on the field,” Paredes said.
Argentina secured their position at the top of the FIFA CONMEBOL standings with an important win against La Canarinha. They currently have 31 points after 14 matches, while Brazil is in fourth place with 21 points.
