The 26-man England roster for the tournament in Germany includes Anthony Gordon. The winger was picked ahead of Manchester City's Jack Grealish, so supporters expected him to have more opportunities to shine during the campaign. He only got to play two minutes, though, as a late substitution during the 0-0 tie that the team played in the group stage against Slovenia. Gordon was not used by Southgate at all in the remaining stages of the competition.

Gordon has now spoken out about his disappointment with Southgate's decision to bench the Three Lions following England's defeat to Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 final. The England winger has not yet hit his best form this season like he did last, but he has been called up to play in the Three Lions' Nations League games.

While doing an interview for iTV, he said, “I was disappointed, because I believe in myself so much. I feel unstoppable, especially at that point of the season I had just had.‌ I felt like no-one could defend me, no-one could deal with me over 90 minutes. I felt like I was ready to and really impress people and help the country win the trophy.‌ To envision what I envisioned… to what it was, it was disappointing.”

“I just like to get on with what I’ve got to do” : Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon was then questioned about what he thought of his rare involvements in the tournament and not getting many minutes. The former Everton winger said, “Nothing, really. I didn’t ever really ask. I’m not really that type of guy. I just like to get on with what I’ve got to do. I believe in myself, so even from the bench I was thinking, ‘If he brings me on, I’m going to be ready, I’m going to change the game.’ But it didn’t happen.”

When England plays Finland later this week, the Newcastle United attacker will certainly be hoping that he will see more playing time under acting manager Lee Carsley.
