Viktor Gyokeres denied rumors of a January move to Manchester United, stating that he wanted to wrap up the season with Sporting CP. Since Ruben Amorim took over as United's manager in place of Erik ten Hag, there has been conjecture that the Portuguese manager may bring some of his former Sporting stars to Old Trafford. Gyokeres, a prolific forward, has hinted that his long-term future is questionable but has ruled out leaving in January.
While having a conversation with Fotbollskanalen, about his future, he said, "It's not something I think about, nor something I give any importance to. It's just rumours, nothing concrete. Of course, I want to finish the season at Sporting, I'm enjoying my time there. I don't feel stressed about making a change in the future. We'll see when the time comes."
The Sweden striker also spoke about the major rumours linking him to Manchester United, after his former manager made the move to Old Trafford. He added, "[Amorim] probably already has strikers there... It's fun but not something I attach any importance to because it's talk and nothing concrete."
Amorim is not ruling out Gyokeres joining United in the upcoming season, but the 26-year-old won't be coming cheaply because his contract reportedly contains a €100 million (£83 million/$107 million) release clause. According to estimates, he might be permitted in 2025 paying as little as £63 million ($81 million). It's unclear if Manchester United will approach the Swedish international first.
“He made me develop so much” : Viktor Gyokeres
Gyokeres continued by expressing his displeasure with Amorim's decision to join United after leaving Sporting Lisbon. The Swedish striker claimed that throughout their brief stay together in Lisbon, the Portuguese tactician had greatly aided his development.
The former Coventry City striker added, “It’s very sad that he’s leaving, but of course we understand his decision. He has of course meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that chance and that he made me develop so much. Now we look forward to working with the new coach.”
