The football community has come together to honour the life and contributions of esteemed journalist Patrick Barclay, who passed away at the age of 77. The Football Writers' Association has released a heartfelt statement on behalf of Barclay’s family, announcing plans for a future celebration of his life, where full tributes will be shared.
Throughout his distinguished career, Barclay made many contributions to the publications such as the Independent, Guardian/Observer, Times, and the Telegraph. He also authored several noteworthy books, including biographies of legendary managers like Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Heartfelt messages pour in for the legend
Former England internationals Alan Shearer and Robbie Fowler paid heartfelt tributes to Barclay, who was raised in Dundee and began his journalism career at the Dundee Evening Telegraph.
Numerous colleagues of Barclay responded to the FWA’s post on X, with Lee Clayton, Global Publisher of Sport for DMG Media, emphasizing that the writer was not only charming and smart but also incredibly welcoming to everyone.
Barclay had a rewarding and extensive career in print journalism, which he successfully complemented by venturing into broadcasting. He frequently contributed to Sky Sports' Sunday Supplement, where he engaged in insightful discussions with fellow sports professionals.
"The SJA wishes to express its deepest condolences following the news that we have lost Patrick Barclay," it read. "We share in the sadness of his family, our friends at the FWA, and all who knew Paddy. An SJA Sports Writer of the Year Award winner, he will be greatly missed by us all," Sports Journalist Association.
"He was a reference point for some of football’s most significant moments and in this era of increasing recency bias, you could always rely on him to provide foot-on-the-ball context and analysis. To suggest he was hugely respected and warmly regarded is an understatement by some way. The tributes on here speak volumes," a fan said.
