Uruguay's Darwin Nunez who plays as a forward for Liverpool, has been fined and given a five-game suspension by the South American confederation CONMEBOL due to his participation in a large fight during the semi-final match of the Copa America.

After investigating the altercation after the Uruguay vs. Colombia game in Charlotte, a total of 11 people were penalized, including four players who were suspended. Nunez was among the players involved in a confrontation with spectators in the stands at the Bank of America Stadium, leading to a chaotic end to the match.

Nunez's penalty is the most severe, with other players receiving four matches or less, in addition to fines.

Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who represents Tottenham in the Premier League, has been given a four-match suspension. Furthermore, defenders Mathias Olivera, Ronald Araujo, and Jose Maria Gimenez have all received three-match bans.

Both the Federation and the players are fined 

Nunez received a fine of $20,000 while other players were fined in the range of $16,000 to $50,000. Additionally, the Uruguayan football federation was fined $20,000.The amount will be deducted from revenue and prize money. 

Uruguay's Centre back Gimminez revealed that the players leapt into the stands out of concern for their friends and family in the particular section of the stands.

The Case is open to appeals

It is reported that the players and federation can appeal against the punishments.

CONMEBOL did not state when the suspension of the players will be put into effect, whether the players will be banned from CONMEBOL games or their regular, club games. 

Uruguay are scheduled to play a friendly against Guatemala in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday and then head into World Cup qualifiers at home to Paraguay on September 6 and away to Venezuela on September 10.
