The UEFA Champions League returned this week with an important second-leg round of 16 fixtures. A marquee clash between Ligue One champions Paris Saint Germain and Premier League table toppers Liverpool unfolded at Anfield.
In addition to this, Catalan club Barcelona squared off against Benfica at Estadi Olimpic, Bayern Munich faced Bayer Leverkusen at Bayarena and Inter-Milan clashed against Feyenoord at San Siro.
Ligue One Champions Paris Saint Germain stunned the table toppers from the league phase at their home ground. Liverpool headed into the match with a slender 1-0 lead, having secured an outrageous victory at Parc Des Princes. Paris Saint Germain's forwards Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele linked up in the 11th minute to fox last match's hero Alison Becker to get an early lead.
Liverpool tried to make inroads in regulation time, but PSG's defence remained solid to deny them an equaliser. Nuno Mendis impressively marked Liverpool's star, Mo Salah, and kept him silent throughout the fixture. PSG's goalkeeper Donnarumma capped off a memorable performance by making two big saves in regulation time followed by three saves in the penalty shootout. Paris Saint Germain defeated Liverpool 4-1 on penalties and Donnarumma was announced as the man of the match.
Spanish football club giants Barcelona clashed against Benfica in their second-leg tie. The Catalan giants were high in confidence, having won the first leg with just 10 men. Barcelona stamped their authority right from the start as Raphinha found the net in the 11th minute, only for Benfica to equalise two minutes later via Barcelona playing their usual high line exploited Benfica offensively with teen Prodigy Lamine Yamal scoring a beautiful blitz curler in the 27th minute. Raphinha got his second of the match in the 42nd minute with an assist from Balde. Barcelona defeated Benfica 3-1 (4-1 on aggregate ) to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Bayern Munich again defeated their arch-rivals Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg 2-0, with goals from Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies helping their club to advance to the Quarterfinals. Inter-Milan made easy work of Feyenoord to qualify for the next stage with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.
