Tottenham Hotspur has made a request to Premier League broadcasters to enhance their branding by using either 'Tottenham Hotspur' or 'Spurs' in all references to the club.
According to a report by The Athletic, the club communicated this preference through an email sent to TV rights-holders globally, titled "Tottenham Hotspur: Naming Update." As a result, Sky Sports graphics have started reflecting this change, referring to Ange Postecoglou as the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur instead of just Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur don't want to be called only 'Tottenham'
Since 2011, the club has adopted a policy to refer to themselves as ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ rather than simply 'Tottenham,' emphasising their unique identity beyond the geographical name. This request to broadcasters emerges from a recently remastered brand identity that was introduced in November, highlighting the club's commitment to maintaining a distinctive presence in the football community.
"Tottenham Hotspur have provided clarification regarding the club’s name. They have requested that the club be primarily known as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs being the preferred short version. The club has requested that they are not referred to as Tottenham," read the club's email.
Tottenham Spurs haven't been at their best on the field this season, sitting in 12th place in the Premier League table ahead of Saturday's crucial match against Ipswich. Under Postecoglou, the team has experienced setbacks, losing the Carabao Cup semi-final to Liverpool and being eliminated from the FA Cup. However, there is still a promising opportunity in the Europa League, where they will take on AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 of the competition.
