Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola cheap shot their arch-rivals Liverpool in a recent press conference, saying that the Reds will never be able to equal City’s remarkable Premier League points total of 100. This record, set in the 2017-18 season, remains the highest achieved by any club in a single season, with City finishing a commanding 19 points ahead of second-placed Manchester United.

Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Everton in Wednesday's Merseyside Derby meant that Arne Slot's team could no longer surpass City's record. Currently, Liverpool has amassed 57 points from 24 matches and can only reach a maximum of 99 points, even if they win all their remaining 14 matches and claim the league title.

Guardiola's side currently trails Liverpool by 16 points, as their pursuit of a fifth consecutive English crown has faced a dramatic setback. Liverpool sits seven points ahead of Arsenal in their quest for a 20th title. Winning the league will help Liverpool equalise Manchester United's record.

Pep Guardiola's cheeky dig at Liverpool

In response to criticism surrounding City’s recent mishaps following Tuesday’s 3-2 home defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off round first leg, Guardiola addressed the situation with a cheeky remark aimed at Liverpool.

“We took all the records in England. Who would do 100 points now in modern football? I’m waiting, or four in a row? I’m waiting - with clubs like Bournemouth, Fulham and Wolves that you have to play." Pep said.

“The standards, we dictated. Have you seen Liverpool this season? They cannot do 100 points already - 99 but not 100.” He added.

He asserted that no other team can match the level of dominance his side has displayed over the past few years. While Liverpool might not surpass City’s record as fifth in the standings, Guardiola acknowledged that his team has indeed faced challenges in keeping pace with their rivals this season.

“We cannot do it for the problems we’ve had. There are a lot of players, with the amount of minutes they have had, who are so tired, emotionally as well." Pep added.

Guardiola explained one of the reasons for the team's downfall this season was being unable to create enough good scoring chances when they had possession.

“It’s the first time that me and many of the players have lived this position but we have to accept it what happened in the past was not normal.” Pep concluded.
