The South Korean star came on in the 61st minute, replacing David Martinez. He made an instant impact by winning a penalty in the 81st minute. Denis Bouanga converted from the spot to make it 2-2.

Initially, referee Ricardo Montero did not award the penalty. But after a VAR review, the decision went in LAFC’s favour.

Speaking after the match, the former Tottenham Hotspur star insisted there was no doubt about the foul by Chicago defender Carlos Teran.

"It was a great pass and there was definitely contact and it was definitely a penalty, no doubt about it," Son said. “A bit disappointed not getting three points but I think everybody put in a lot of effort, happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon."

Son joined LAFC in an MLS-record $26 million transfer from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. In 10 years at Spurs, he scored 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances.

The forward said it felt good to get back on the pitch and now aims to start the next game.

"I'm getting ready and it was a decent 30 minutes in my legs getting ready for next week," Son added. "So we'll see how I progress in the training sessions and with the players and we'll see if next week I can start the game and make a big impact."
