Emerson Royal, the Brazilian defender, has joined AC Milan from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. The Serie A team announced on Monday that Royal has signed a deal that will last until June 2028 with a one-year option to extend. Both clubs withheld the financial information, although British media said the purchase was valued at about 15 million euros ($16.38 million) plus three million euros in add-ons.

The 25-year-old Brazilian international, who has 10 caps, left Spanish team Barcelona in 2021 to sign with Spurs. Atletico Mineiro in Brazil was where he first began his youth career, but he also had stints elsewhere. Emerson will wear the number 22 shirt at Milan. Emerson has made 101 appearances for Spurs in all competitions.

The AC Milan squad is currently not in a particularly comfortable situation. After a successful preseason preparation in the USA, Paulo Fonseca had a disappointing start to the Serie A season with just two points out of a possible nine, disappointing the supporters who were hoping to see the new face of the squad.

The Brazilian was referred to by the Italian news source as "one of the worst players on the pitch" at the Stadio Olimpico, where two goals in four minutes threatened to send Lazio into a 2-1 victory, but Rafael Leao's equalizer kept them in the game.

"Even Milan keeps conceding the same goal on Emerson Royal's side. His €15 million (12.6 million pounds; 16.6 million dollars) transfer from Tottenham Hotspur seems like the biggest donation in the history of the Milan Foundation, which is charitably trying to fulfil his dream of becoming a footballer."

Paulo Fonseca gave Emerson Royal his first official start in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Lazio; nevertheless, Gazzetta dello Sport has since made some harsh remarks about the South American. Meanwhile, AC Milan's next league match is against Venezia while they open their UEFA Champions League camping against Liverpool on 18th September.
