Ryan Porteous's two remaining group matches at UEFA Euro 2024 will be missed by Scotland as a result of his prolonged red card ban. The 25-year-old defender for Watford was substituted late during the first half of Germany's 5-1 victory after he gave up a penalty following a clumsy tackle on Ilkay Gundogan. UEFA's control, ethics, and disciplinary body imposed an extra game to the punishment for "serious rough play" after analysing the event.

Scotland's group stage matches conclude on Sunday against Hungary and begin on Wednesday against Switzerland. In the meantime, the Scottish FA is being fined €5,625 (£4,753) following the "throwing of objects" that Scotland supporters engaged in during the crushing defeat at Munich's Allianz Arena.

The Scotland manager spoke to the media after the game as he said, The other night, he was trying to stop a clear goal-scoring opportunity and he definitely went in too hard and we are pleased that Gundogan appears to have no lasting damage. It is something that Ryan will learn, but is an honest challenge to try to get the ball, to try to stop a goal-scoring opportunity so I wouldn’t be too hard on him.”

The manager added that, “He was one of my cuddles. I explained the situation. It doesn’t look good. Ryan didn’t want to make that challenge, he wanted to stop a goal. He is very down, as you would expect, but we will pick him up, don’t worry about that.”

“We didn’t perform like we wanted to on Friday.” : Grant Hanley

Defender Grant Hanley argues that "added nerves" are insufficient justification for Scotland's awful performance in Germany's 5-1 victory. After Ryan Porteous was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Ilkay Gundogan shortly before the half in Friday's Euro 2024 opener, Hanley replaced Che Adams at halftime.

Hanley said, These games are huge, a big occasion and everyone wants to play on those types of nights. So obviously there is a bit of added nerves in the atmosphere around the game. But I don’t think that’s something we can use as an excuse as to why we didn’t perform like we wanted to on Friday."
