Australia did England a huge favor by beating Scotland by 5 wickets in their T20 World Cup encounter on Saturday night. Scotland did their best with the ball but one costly dropped chance in the final over cost them dear. With this loss Richie Berrington and his side will head back home as they were knocked out of the tournament.

It was Scotland who batted first and put a reasonable score of 180 on the board from their 20 overs. Brandon McMullen was the best batter for his team with 60 runs from 34 balls. Skipper Richie Berrington was not out on 42 while opening batter George Munsey scored 35 runs.

Earlier in the day, England had beaten Namibia by 41 runs to keep their hopes alive to make it to the Super-8 stages. The rain-affected game saw England scored 122 runs from their 10 overs. Namibia could only conjure up 84 in their chase despite the best efforts from veteran star David Wiese.

Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis earn Australia close win

Australia chasing 181 runs to win, were reduced to 34/2 in the 6th over by the Scotland bowlers. Brad Wheal had David Warner look to play a big shot only to be caught by Richie Berrington for 1.

Mitchell Marsh tried to pull the ball deep into the stand but couldn’t time the ball well as substitute fielder Charlie Tear took the catch off Shafyaan Sharif’s bowling. Glenn Maxwell hit Mark Watt for a huge six before the Scotland bowler had the last laugh. The Australian batter was caught in his crease as the ball from Watt turned to hit the top of his off-stump.

Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis then added 80 runs for the 4th wicket from 44 balls to bring Australia back into the game. Safyaan Sharif was three sixes by Head before the bowler had the last laugh dismissing the batter for 69.

Marcus Stoinis who has been in consistent form during the tournament scored yet another crucial fifty. Mark Watt got his second wicket when he had Stoinis bowled for 59 while attempting a reverse sweep.

Needing 26 runs off 18 balls. Tim David hit 3 fours off successive balls to put Australia in the driver’s seat. Chris Sole dropped an easy catch with Australia needing 3 runs from 4 balls to seal their fate. Tim David hit the very next ball for a huge six to help

Australia win by 5 wickets and 2 balls to spare. Scotland on the other hand were heartbroken as England now make it to the Super-8 phase as the 2nd placed team in Group B.
