In only their sixth appearance at the European Championships, Romania have registered an unlikely win over Ukraine. Goals from Nicolae Stanciu, Razvan Marin and Denis Dragus ensured that Romania got only their second win in the history of the tournament. Ukraine are currently ranked 36th in the FIFA rankings as compared to their opponents, Romania who occupy the 56th spot. Therefore, Ukraine started off as favourites in the game but did not play like that at all.

Nicolae Stanciu scored during the 29th minute to provide Romania an early advantage over Ukraine, becoming the first man who plays in the Saudi Pro League to find the net at the Euros. The Romanians went into half-time with the slender advantage but improved on the lead after two goals in the space of four minutes effectively ended the contest for the Ukraine out. This win has certainly put them on the right track in the tournament and would now look to get out of the group stage for only the second time in their history.

What happened prior to the game between Ukraine and Romania?

Romania and Ukraine faced off in the first match of Group E at UEFA Euro 2024 inside the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Prior to kickoff, Ukraine players posed with their flags wrapped around their shoulders. Ukraine is facing a war-torn situation following Russia's invasion, thus the players have declared that they will be playing for their army and countrymen to give everyone something to celebrate.

Artem Dovbyk, who led Ukraine's attack during their Group E opener versus Romania was a player that everyone had set their eyes on. Dovbyk has lately gained attention after winning the Pichichi title (La Liga top goalscorer), netting twenty-four times for Girona in his debut campaign in Spanish top flight football. But it was a forgettable evening for the striker, who was unable to contribute for the national team today.
