Roberto De Zerbi has explained the reasons behind Marseille's decision to halt their pursuit of Paul Pogba in January. The talented midfielder, who previously played for the Red Devils, is currently a free agent following his departure from Juventus last November.

Although Pogba is still under suspension due to doping violations, there is positive news on the horizon. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has recently shortened his original four-year ban to 18 months, allowing him to return to competitive football next month.

A return to his homeland was highly anticipated as ex-Brighton boss De Zerbi made it clear he wanted to bring Pogba to Marseille, asserting that he would make amends for the FIFA World Cup winner. However, the signing of a former Arsenal midfielder effectively put an end to any chances of Pogba joining the team, with Marseille securing Ismael Bennacer from AC Milan instead.

The arrival of a former Arsenal midfielder ended any speculation about a move for Pogba, as Marseille swiftly secured Ismael Bennacer from AC Milan instead.

De Zerbi dismissed rumours that Pogba’s inclusion would disrupt the dressing room, clearly stating that there were other reasons behind the club's decision not to extend a contract offer to the 31-year-old.

"No one could change the balance in the dressing room; no one will destabilise it as long as I am the manager. That was not the problem," De Zerbi said.

"Pogba is a really great player but you have to understand where we could use him once he was available to play, in what role and in what position. The more champions we have, the happier I will be. It was not that," he added.

Pogba certainly had exceptional talent, with much silverware, including four Serie A titles and a Europa League victory while at Juventus and Manchester United. He also played a key role in France's remarkable triumph at the 2018 World Cup.

On the other hand, the chance to acquire former Serie A and Africa Cup of Nations champion Bennacer, at 27 years old, seemed fascinating. Despite not making a senior appearance for Arsenal, Bennacer had earned respect in the football community. His playing style has caught the eye of De Zerbi, who had previously expressed interest in bringing him to Brighton.
