During Real Madrid's Copa del Rey match against Real Sociedad, the play was temporarily paused due to troubling chants of 'die' directed at defender Raul Asencio from home fans. Late in the first half, these remarks led to a visible response, with the screens inside the Reale Arena displaying a message promoting respect and sportsmanship.
The statement read, "No to racist, xenophobic and intolerant chants. Encourage and support the team while respecting the rival."
Why did Asencio receive such hate?
Asencio received a yellow card near the end of the first half and was substituted at halftime as Madrid secured a 1-0 victory in the semi-final first leg, thanks to an early goal from Endrick. At just 22 years old, Asencio is among multiple Madrid Academy players currently under investigation for their involvement in an alleged child sex abuse video scandal.
This season marks a crucial turning point for Asencio under Carlo Ancelotti, as he has already played in 24 matches across all competitions, including six in the Champions League, taking responsibility in the absence of senior defenders like David Alaba and Dani Carvajal.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti addressed the media following the team's 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. While he was pleased with the win, he expressed concern for Raúl Asencio, who faced challenging treatment from the crowd at the Reale Arena.
When asked about the young player's well-being, Ancelotti emphasized the impact of negative remarks, stating that no one should have to endure a stadium chanting harsh phrases. Recognizing the emotional strain, he made the decision to substitute Asencio, prioritizing his mental health and ensuring that it wouldn't affect his performance during the match.
“I think the referee acted well. Vinicius spoke to the referee, stopped the match and activated the protocol. He did well; it was the right thing to do. Afterwards I took Asencio off because he had two things: he was affected and had a yellow card. So I preferred to take him out.” Ancelotti said.
