Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made waves last year by becoming the majority shareholder of French club Stade Malherbe Caen. Following in his footsteps, teammate Vinicius Junior is also venturing into club ownership by acquiring Portuguese side FC Alverca with a consortium.
While details regarding the financial aspects of the deal, including the amount of Vinicius’ specific investment, remain unclear, Diario AS has confirmed information from Record that he will be part of the group, assuming majority ownership.
Vinicius Junior to be a 'club-owner'
Alverca has officially announced that the previous owner, Ricardo Vicintin, has sold his controlling stake to a consortium composed of both Spanish and Brazilian investors, with more information expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
Alverca is poised for success, currently holding the second position and sitting in a promotion spot for Liga NOS. They’re just two points behind league leaders Tondela and maintain a one-point lead over Penafiel, who are in the play-off spot beneath them.
Established in 1939, the club had a stint in the Primeira Liga during the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, a financial crisis in 2005, coupled with debts amounting to €5 million, led to their administration. Since then, they have worked diligently to stage a recovery and, last season, successfully earned promotion back to the second tier.
The club has a rich history with notable former players such as Deco, Maniche, and Ricardo Carvalho. Additionally, Jesualdo Ferreira, who has had a coaching career, served as their manager at one time. Although Vinicius's level of involvement remains uncertain, it's encouraging to see a growing trend of professional players choosing to invest in smaller, community-focused clubs. If Vinicius decides to move to Saudi Arabia, he will undoubtedly have the financial capacity to acquire a major La Liga club.
