With a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia, Uruguay achieved their greatest Copa America victory since 1959 along with all but guaranteed a trip to the quarterfinals. With their triumph on Friday, the South American team achieved their greatest tournament victory since defeating Argentina 5-0 over 65 years prior.

Eighth-minute freekick set up Marcelo Bielsa's team's opening goal. Near the halfway semi-circle, defender Ronald Araujo advanced to the ball and picked out Nahitan Nandez from the left, who met it with his head and sent it into the penalty area. As it wobbled in the area, Facundo Pellistri arrived at the back post, heading home his very first goal of the competition.

At MetLife Stadium, Uruguayan supporters did not have to wait too long for their team's second. Winger Maximiliano Araujo collected the ball near midway and surged forward to set up their goal in the twenty-first minute after they regained possession in their half. Darwin Nunez met and scored the first time when he put a ball behind the Bolivian counterpart and into the box. The Liverpool player scored another goal at Copa America 2024 from close range.

M. Araujo scored their third goal of the game shortly after creating the second.Making it 3-0 in New Jersey, Nicolas de la Cruz slipped the Uruguayan forward into the penalty area behind their rival's defense.

Their fourth came four minutes later. Thanks to some rapid one-two play inside the area, Federico Valverde scored this time, however they weren't done yet. For the first time since 1967, Uruguay has scored seven goals during its first two tournament games as Rodrigo Bentancur scored the game's sixth goal in the 89th minute.

With the big win, Uruguay tops Group C and virtually guarantees a spot in the competition's knockout rounds, while Bolivia finishes in fourth place and loses all hope of making it to the quarterfinals. In order to guarantee the top rank in the group going into the knockout stages, they still need to defeat the USA in their last group game on July 2.
