Nico Williams's excellent showing at Euro 2024 cemented his status as one among the brightest prospects in European football. Williams, 21, attracted attention when Spain overcame Georgia during their round of 16 match on Sunday.

The winger for Athletic Bilbao scored once and assisted on another as Spain defeated Germany 4-1 in Cologne thereby setting up a tantalizing quarterfinal matchup with the hosts. Following the game, Inaki, Williams' older brother and another professional football player, was quick to compliment his sibling. He posted on social media with the caption, "What a great thing that you are my brother, Nico Williams."

With the victory over Georgia, Williams made football history in Europe by accomplishing a goal that not even the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo has been able to do. Opta claims that Williams is the only player in history to score a goal, assist on a goal, and successfully complete 100% of his passes (46/46) in a match he started during the UEFA European Championship (since 1980).

Williams is apparently attracting interest from several elite clubs around Europe, including FC Barcelona and Arsenal and Chelsea of the Premier League. According to Spanish reports, Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, would try her hardest to recruit Williams this summer. As the tournament nears its conclusion, Luis de la Fuente is expected to be praying that the transfer rumors involving Williams do not become a distraction.

“I don't want to offend anyone but…” : Nico Williams

After the game, the winger spoke to the reporters and said that, “We have a lot of confidence and a team with talent, quality and commitment. Being convinced of your ability is very important. I don't want to offend anyone but we have the best team at this tournament.”

The Athletic Bilbao winger added, “Germany is a fantastic team, they have some of the best players in the world and they are very organised, very disciplined. But they will face a team that is very similar to them, very committed, very well organised, difficult to overcome, hungry with lots of ambition. I know it's the usual thing to say but in football it's the small details that will decide the match and what happens in the end."
