Manchester United fans are actively taking their stance about cost-cutting measures by expressing their opinions to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS through large banner messages.
Ratcliffe, recognized as Britain’s richest man, had teamed up with the Glazer family at Old Trafford as the co-owner of United. Although there are ambitious plans for stadium redevelopment and ongoing discussions surrounding player transfers, some of Ratcliffe's fundraising efforts have faced scrutiny.
To manage resources effectively, the club has made some difficult decisions, including reducing payments for club ambassadors and making 250 staff positions redundant. Additionally, a standardized match ticket price of £66 has been introduced. Moving forward, it would be essential for the club to engage more actively with the loyal fan base to ensure their voices are heard during such important changes.
Supporters made their discontent clear during a recent UEFA Europa League match against Rangers, displaying a banner reading "Your debt, not ours.” The 1958 group formally demanded answers from the club, and United’s response revealed major concerns regarding profit & sustainability Rules.
The club have disclosed that the club is grappling with substantial annual losses, exceeding £300 million over the past three years. This is not a sustainable situation. Immediate action is imperative to prevent ongoing non-compliance with PSR/FFP (financial fair play) regulations, which poses a serious threat to the club's ability to compete effectively on the pitch in the future.
"As previously communicated, we are however currently making a significant loss each year – totalling over £300 million in the past three years. This is not sustainable and if we do not act now we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR/FFP [financial fair play] requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch," read United's statement.
“We will get back to a cash positive position as soon as possible and we will have to make some difficult choices to get there. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club. We do not expect fans to make up all the current shortfall" the statement added. Manchester United emerged victorious in the Europa League fixture against Hoffenheim, thanks to a late goal by Bruno Fernandes.
