La Liga striker detained for sexual assault charges

The Spanish Guardia Civil police have detained Valencia forward Rafa Mir on suspicion of sexual assault, the club said on Tuesday. A representative for the Guardia Civil said that a La Liga player was being held in Valencia on suspicion of sexually assaulting one lady, but they withheld the player's identity.

Valencia said in a statement that it would work with the legal system and that it was aware of the arrest. Commenting was not immediately possible from Mir's representatives. Rafa Mir, who moved to the Mestalla in the summer on loan from parent club Sevilla, has made four appearances for Valencia.

The two victims, who are about 25 years old, needed hospital care after the event and filed a complaint. The striker spent the night in a cell at a Valencia police station, where he is presently awaiting transfer to appear before a court. He did not practice with his teammates at Valencia today. According to the report, there has been another arrest made about the incident. 

Valencia, and his team, issued a statement on the situation, citing sources inside the organization as stating they will wait to decide Mir's future until the current inquiry against him ends.  After joining Wolves in January 2018, he participated in the Premier League, however, he only made four appearances and did not score.

Rafa Mir joined Valencia on a loan

He played for Valencia in the Champions League and had loan stints at Las Palmas and Nottingham Forest. In August 2021, Mir signed a six-year contract with Sevilla, which caused him to leave Wolves. He would go on to make 105 appearances for the team, although he only scored 24 goals before leaving.  After going back on loan to his childhood team Valencia in July, he has played in four La Liga matches and assisted on one goal.
