Kyle Walker, a defender for England, acknowledges the demand for an English head coach but believes Thomas Tuchel is going to be a "great appointment." After Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, the German has been appointed as Gareth Southgate's replacement, becoming just the third permanent foreign manager of England.
The Football Association has come under fire for failing to consider English applicants.
It is about outcomes, according to Walker, who was on the losing team when Tuchel guided Chelsea to victory in the UEFA Champions League in 2021.
The Manchester City superstar spoke on the BBC Podcast as he said, “I can understand the English public thinking it should be an English manager taking control of the national team. But for me it’s about who is going to get the results, he has proven at big clubs that he can manage big players with big characters, the likes of PSG, he went to Chelsea and won the Champions League against Manchester City, that is one that sticks firmly in my mind.
The England right-back added, “It is a great appointment and it is an even better appointment if he puts me in the team again. I think it is a great appointment but the proof is in the pudding, we need to do it as a set of players.”
“Would be disappointing if we don’t see a trophy” : Kyle Walker
With only an 18-month deal, Tuchel will begin his new position on January 1 and is expected to win the 2026 World Cup. It would be a "disappointment" if this collection of players did not take home a trophy, according to Walker, who was a part of both of England's losses in the European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate.
The former Tottenham Hotspur defender said, “It would be disappointing if we don’t see a trophy with the group of players we have got, on paper it is incredible, but nothing is given in football.
