Jose Mourinho, the manager of Fenerbahce, was sent off during his reunion game against Manchester United. During Manchester United's 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce during the UEFA Europa League, the Portuguese manager complained to the fourth referee and was sent to the stands.
Six years after being fired at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho was his usual furious self on the sidelines, and it was implied that he sought "revenge" against United. For his reunion with Manchester United, Jose Mourinho showed up with a suit and tie. He was excited the entire time, displaying a great response to Andre Onana's double save.
Christian Eriksen gave Manchester United the lead in the first half with a strong counterattack, but Fenerbahce dominated most of the game. Fenerbahce's Youssef En-Nesyri equalized minutes during the second half, prolonging United's dismal defensive performance in Europe under Ten Hag.
However, Mourinho's most notable time in the spotlight occurred during the second half during which he was dismissed due to his response to a penalty. Both teams tried to win, and when official Clement Turpin rejected their requests for a penalty, the Fenerbahce bench erupted.
Manuel Ugarte's challenge sent Bright Osayi-Samuel down in the area, but VAR upheld the on-field decision to continue. The "special one" marched out to the fourth referee to voice his displeasure, but in true Mourinho form, he went too far and was dismissed for using derogatory and offensive language.
“He is one of the best referees in the world” : Jose Mourinho
Mourinho's remarks following the final whistle were as amusing as ever, and he made it abundantly evident that he was unhappy with the choice. He said, “I don’t want to speak about it. He [the referee] told me something incredible. He said at the same time he could see the action in the box and my behaviour on the touchline.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur manager added, “I congratulate him because it’s absolutely incredible. His peripheral vision during the game, at 100 miles an hour, he had one eye on the penalty situation and one eye on the bench and my behaviour. That is the explanation he gave me, that is why he is one of the best referees in the world.”
