In Portugal's UEFA Euro 2024 encounter against Slovenia, former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo had a penalty saved before scoring in the shootout. The BBC's broadcast of Cristiano Ronaldo's missed penalty against Slovenia was called a "disgrace" by former England captain John Terry.

During extra time of their respective national teams' match in the UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16, Ronaldo, 39, saw his spot-kick saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The veteran broke down in tears due to the intensity of the situation, but he quickly collected himself and went on to win the shootout.

The BBC captioned their evaluation of Oblak's save as "Missiano Penaldo." Terry expressed his disapproval of this by merely writing "BBC this is a disgrace" on a story on Instagram. Terry missed a penalty in a highly publicized match during the 2008 Champions League final, so he is familiar with the feeling. Even while Manchester United ultimately prevailed over Terry's Chelsea in that same shootout, Ronaldo missed.

Portugal's hero in the end turned out to be Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic were denied by Costa during the shootout after Oblak stopped one penalty in extra time.

“I didn’t miss once during the year” : Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to the media after the game as he said, “I could have given the national team the advantage, but I didn’t manage it, Oblak saved. I didn’t miss once during the year, when I needed it most Oblak saved.”

The former Real Madrid striker added, "It’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is the progress, the team deserved it. Slovenia spent almost the entire time defending, the team deserves congratulations, especially our goalkeeper who made three good saves [in the shootout].‌Even the strongest people have their days, I was down and I was sad because the team needed me... I can't do it, I'll talk later, I'll talk later.”
