Cristiano Ronaldo heaves a sigh of relief after a win

The match ended 0-0 in regular time and went into penalties as both teams saw their backline hold their own in the extra time. Portugal scored thrice while Slovenia drew blanks as Diogo Costa saved all three chances.

Speaking at the end of the game, Ronaldo said ““I could have given the national team the advantage, but I didn’t manage it, Oblak saved. I didn’t miss once during the year, when I needed it most Oblak saved”

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star also said “t’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is the progress, the team deserved it. Slovenia spent almost the entire time defending, the team deserves congratulations, especially our goalkeeper who made three good saves [in the shootout.”

Visibly emotional, Ronaldo ended the chat to the media by saying “Even the strongest people have their days, I was down and I was sad because the team needed me... I can't do it, I'll talk later, I'll talk later.”

Diogo Costa was seen taking in the applause at the end of the game when he said “this is probably the best game of my life. I am focused on doing what I do and I went in with my gut feeling”

The Portugal goalkeeper also said “Of course, we had analysed the penalty takers, but players change and they change how they shoot. I am very happy and very excited to have helped the team."
